These coasters are an exploration in overmolding sand cast parts using the Scottish thistle as a theme. Initially, bronze blanks were cast with a hollow imprint of a thistle. These blanks were then sanded and overmolded with aluminum to fill the thistle cavity. The complex was then turned flat on a lathe, sanded on its sides and bottom, and a cork backing was added. Designed to patina naturally over time, the coasters reflect light radially to catch the eye.
